The Santa Anita Derby is considered one of the most important pre-emptive races, which leads to the Kentucky Derby. Held on the west coast annually in April it is hosted by the Santa Anita Park.
So far the Santa Anita Derby has sent fourteen of its winners on to compete in the Kentucky Derby. Throughout its history it has brought forth such Kentucky Derby winners as Silver Charm, Winning Colors, and Sunday Silence. The Santa Anita Derby is also responsible for producing the Triple Crown winner Affirmed.
Except for the years of 1942-1944 (war time) the Santa Anita Derby has been run since it was founded in 1935. However the first original races were run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles.

The Santa Anita Derby proudly boasts such records as; Pat Valenzuela, who in 1980 took the title as being the youngest jockey to claim a win at the Santa Anita Derby. Jeff Mullins who became the first trainer to take three consecutive wins at the Santa Anita Derby. In 2005 the first woman trainer to take a win was Jenine Sahadi.
Speed Records for the fastest winning time 1:47.00 at the Santa Anita Derby are shared by Indian Charlie in 1998, Sham in 1973, and Lucky Debonair who claimed the title in 1965.
For the 2008 running Colonel John was the winner in 1:48.16 time.

Santa Anita Park, also hosts the prep races to the Santa Anita Derby, these include; Santa Catalina Stakes, Sham Stakes, San Vicente Stakes, San Felipe Stakes, san Rafael Stakes, and the San Miquel Stakes.
Santa Anita Park stands out in history for the role it played in the race of legendary horse Seabiscuit, who in the 1940’s claimed his last title at the Santa Anita Handicap.
