Kentucky Derby Traditions

Traditions

The Kentucky Derby is richly steeped in traditions, which play a major role in the Derby’s atmosphere. It is often called everyone’s race, because for over 130 years, the Kentucky Derby has drawn fans from all walks of life, the world over. From Millionaires’ Row, to the infield crowd, they all share a common bond as they enjoy the pre-derby festivities, in anticipation of the greatest and most famous horse race in U.S. history.

As the voice from the paddock judge booms out “riders up” the trainers give a leg up to the riders, as they are sent out through the tunnel to parade onto the infield as the University of Louisville’s marching band strikes up the strains of the official song of the Kentucky Derby, Stephen Foster’s “My Old Kentucky Home.”

Of course it wouldn’t be the Kentucky Derby without “mint juleps” a mix of sugar, water, Kentucky bourbon, sprigs of fresh mint, and crushed ice. Over 80,000 mint juleps are served through the Kentucky Oaks, and Kentucky Derby races, in silver ice frosted souvenir cups, depicting previous derby winners. Another favorite at the Derby is “Burgoo” a traditional southern stew made up of lamb meat and vegetables.

Legalized gambling is also a favorite pastime of the Kentucky Derby, achieved through pari-mutuel betting at the track, or through off track betting systems.

The official flower and long standing tradition of the Kentucky Derby is the rose, hence the “run for the roses” slogan. A garland of 554 red roses is draped over the winning horse, which is placed by the governor of Kentucky, who also awards the trophy.

Top hats are also a common site, and tradition of the Kentucky Derby, worn by men in Millionaires’ Row, as well as lavishly dressed ladies, who turn out with fascinating hats as well, wide brimmed and often plumed, and very colorful. One would almost assume they had traveled back in time for a day, to the early beginnings of the Derby.

The traditions of the Kentucky Derby, carried over from all its years of brilliance and fame, truly make it what it is today. Using history to an advantage the Kentucky Derby remains to this day a unique blend of pastimes and celebration, not just for the memorable equines who have established its brilliance and fame, but also as a landmark in the history and heritage of the American people.
